Core Values
Core Values are those ideals we hold to, the values that we cherish and embrace and, if even subconsciously, the ideas that we identify with. A few years ago I was introduced to a set of eight core values from Rohan Woods School where I have taught for more than seven years. Although, these were primarily focused on the educational community (establishing goals, accepting responsibility, etc.), I decided to modify these to adapt to my own personal life as a statement of “what I believe (who I am)” and “how I choose to live (what I choose to be).”
These are the eight core values slightly modified and adapted to my own “Core Values.”
1. Grow: It is not enough to simply be here. I choose to move forward in some measurable, quantifiable way. I will commit to continual improvement and will support challenging goals.
2. Nurture: I will contribute to and maintain a nurturing environment. I will seek ways to foster a “joy” of learning. I will offer friendship and support and will choose to be encouraging with my comments.
3. Be Accountable: I will accept personal responsibility for my Actions, Decisions, and Outcomes.
4. Respect: I will demonstrate respect for all individuals in thought, word, and deed.
5. Communicate: I will communicate respectfully, openly and honestly.
6. Collaborate: I will use a collaborative approach to decision-making, especially when my decisions involve those around me.
7. Share: I will promote sharing and compassion within my close circle of friends, within families and within my community at large.
8. Persevere: I will persevere to achieve my personal best.
